John Logan: Dear Writer

Inspired by Maria Popova’s beautiful book The Velocity of Being, we’ve scattered letters of encouragement from some of your peers across the country. We hope their words bolster you through your drafts, readings, productions, and reviews.

John Logan

Dear Writer,

Allow me share the single best piece of advice I ever got about being a writer, courtesy of my friend Scott Berg, the great biographer: “Keep your head down and do your work.” Meaning, do not be distracted by anything but your writing. Don’t worry about reviews, press, your career trajectory, directors, actors, agents, social media, or anything else. Be tenacious. Be committed. Be serious. And be an artist above all.
